CHARLOTTE – The Democratic National Convention Committee announced state delegation hotel assignments Tuesday morning. Fifty six of the 150 hotels contracted with the DNC will be for state delegates, that's about 6,700 rooms. They will be housed from SouthPark to the airport, and up to Concord.
The four hotels uptown that will house delegates include: Nevada at the Hilton Garden Inn, California at the Hampton Inn and North Carolina at the Crowne Plaza.
For those delegates who are not staying in uptown, we're told their drive into center city will be no longer than 20 minutes.
"They'll be coming in to the convention, most of them before the drive time and another group after drive time is done," said David Parker, the NC Democratic Party chair.
Room prices range from $99 up to $360 a night. Delegates were asked to rank their preferences including cost, location and proximity to entertainment or restaurants. All that information was taken into consideration when assigning the hotels.
With the influx of guests some hotels say they have been hiring since the DNC announcement, while others are still evaluating.
"As soon as we find out what the needs are we obviously have an employment and recruiting process within the hotel that we would go to first," said Tom Manno, the general manager of the Westin Charlotte. "We're certainly interested in hiring as many people from the Charlotte area and we have a recruiting process to tell us how many we need."
The DNCC says each hotel handles their own hires and there is nothing in their contract that even mentions unions.
Past conventions have brought in between $150 million and $200 million to the local economy.
