Though the Democratic National Convention is being hosted by Charlotte, Salisbury hotels will be filled with some of the overflow people working the event. The people staying in Salisbury will most likely have little free time beyond the convention, which means less economic impact.

North Carolina's Latino voters who support Democratic candidates got a boost Wednesday, when a nationally-known leader was assigned as permanent chairman of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. The party chose Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to oversee the September convention's day-to-day proceedings.

The Democratic National Convention Committee announced the hotel assignments for the roughly 6,000 delegates who will descend on Charlotte in September. In a press conference Tuesday, the committee said the Westin Charlotte and the Hilton Center City hotels in uptown Charlotte will be the headquarters hotels.

The leader of a past Democratic National Convention told Charlotte leaders Friday to expect long-term international exposure benefits and jobs after hosting the event in September. In the short term, he convention is projected to pump in between $150 and $200 million in economic impact.

Law enforcement agencies from around the state will assist Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police during the Democratic National Convention in September. Greensboro's assistant police chief said CMPD inquired to law enforcement agencies in the state with more than 100 officers, asking them whether they could help out. Greensboro will provide about 150 officers.

About 500 national and international media members were in Charlotte on Wednesday for a walkthrough of the sites hosting the Democratic National Convention later this year. The group started at Time Warner Cable Arena before moving on to the Charlotte Convention Center and finishing at Bank of America Stadium in the afternoon.

The 2012 Democratic National Convention will be shortened by a day and take place in three Charlotte-area venues in an effort to make it more open and accessible. The convention will kick off on Labor Day with a community celebration at Charlotte Motor Speedway and end with President Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Bank of America Stadium.

Thursday, a long awaited federal security grant for next year's Democratic National Convention was passed by both houses of Congress.
