CHAPEL HILL — Through its portable program, UNC-Chapel Hill's Morehead Planetarium is schooling kids on science, and they may not even realize it.

The Minds on Summer camp series connects kids to ideas, people, and opportunities that will inspire them to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

"It's that practical side of science that sparks interest in children. It's very important for them to have an early interest in it," said educator Rachel Tunstall.

This spark is developing an interest with kids at the Washington Elementary Boys and Girls Club in Raleigh.

"The theme of the week is 'The Ick Factor,' bring in the slime and a whole bunch of hand-on scientific experiments for the kids to do," said Eric DeShield with the Washington Elementary Boys and Girls Club.

The experiments are fun, and also teach kids practical lessons.

"When I learned that we had germs on our hands and we had to use soap or we didn't have to use soap," said 5th-grader Kionna Powell.

It is a shot of science, delivered during the summer, to keep kids engaged when they're not in school. The Minds on Summer series is rolling into area Boys and Girls Clubs through August.
