RALEIGH—After mounting criticism over the past couple days, the Susan G. Komen foundation announced they will reinstate their funding to Planned Parenthood.
The organization released a statement Friday apologizing for the initial withdrawal of the funding. Komen is accused of ending their relationship with Planned Parenthood this week because of their abortion practices.
Planned Parenthood said the support they have received this week has been phenomenal. However, it sparked backlash for the Komen Foundation. Komen said they will amend their policy of not funding grant applicants because they are under investigation.
Planned Parenthood is currently being investigated by the federal government about their abortion practices. Planned Parenthood accused Komen of political pressure from conservative anti-abortion groups.
Grants nationwide totaled $680,000 last year. One day after planned parenthood set up their emergency breast health fund, more than $400,000 in donations came in. Workers in the Raleigh Planned Parenthood location say it has not stopped.
“Our development department has been receiving donations all week. Calls on a regular basis, Facebook, Twitter, all over the board," said Planned Parenthood spokesperson Patty Dillon.
A top ranking national public health official for Komen stepped down from her job, as has the communications director for the Triangle chapter. There is currently no information on the status of their jobs.
A Komen affiliate in North Carolina said all affiliates will meet on a conference Friday afternoon to discuss this issue.
