GREENSBORO - A group of Greensboro volunteers is helping give greater accessibility to low income homeowners with disabilities. Over the week-long effort, they'll build 11 access ramps that will allow people to enter their homes without struggling with steps. Not only is the effort helping the homeowners, but it's leaving a lasting impression on the volunteers.

“We're building access ramps for folks who have either safety issues or mobility issues, getting in and out of the homes that they own,” said Gene Brown the Housing Greensboro executive director.

Officials say none of this would be possible without the help of volunteers. About 70 people are spending their week building these access ramps.

“We have a very small staff of three construction leaders and we have volunteers that assist us throughout the year making home repairs. Our goal is to make homes, warmer, drier, safer,” Brown said.

Grace McMurray came from Madison, Wis. to volunteer this week. She says she never realized how much of an impact she'd make.

“I didn't think it would touch me this way. I feel like I am giving her a new opportunity. It helps her so much. I think she's so grateful, she's such a great person,” said McMurray.

Brown said it's witnessing the effect it has on the owner that gives him the sense of accomplishment.

“And then seeing the homeowners both before they have the ramp built and then afterward. And then see how it really does change their lives,” he said.

While this week is dedicated to housing ramps, Housing Greensboro does other service events throughout the year. They say they are always looking for volunteers to help with their projects.
