WINSTON-SALEM – Seriously ill children at Brenner Children's Hospital have something to show for all they've gone through. The Winston-Salem hospital is one of four in North Carolina -- and 70 worldwide -- that participate in the Beads of Courage program.
Children in treatment for cancer or blood conditions get a colored bead for each test and procedure they go through. Then they can wear their string of beads as a badge of courage.
"You can look at their necklace and just tell what they've been through and all the courage and bravery it takes to endure these procedures," said Stacy Peterson, of Brenner Children's Hospital.
The beads also allow kids to see that other patients are going through some of the same treatments they are.
Kisses 4 Kate sponsors the program. The organization is named after a former patient who first found out about Beads of Courage at another hospital.
