GREENSBORO – Two years ago, voters in Greensboro gave their OK to elect Yvonne Johnson their mayor. Now she's hoping they'll say yes again.
“I have been there for the people,” Johnson said. “Where they work, where they play, where they learn and where they pray.”
Johnson says her 16 years of experience on city council is what sets her apart from her opponent.
“I've learned over those years a lot about good government. I don't have a big ego,” Johnson said. “I am a servant of the people and I love being a servant of the people it's my gift. Everybody has a gift.”
But she points out the city isn't without its challenges. In a tough economy, getting and keeping jobs are at the top of the list.
“We are recruiting businesses and jobs as I speak.” Johnson said. “There are two on the table that we are looking at, but we need to continue that and we need to really focus on how we can help small businesses expand and be viable.”
She says over the last two years she's been able to accomplish a lot, like appointing a sustainability commission and building trust within the community through an international council. But she says there's still more she'd like to do.
“[I want] to really have our colleges and universities connected and have them know that we want to partner with them every chance we get,” Johnson said.
And she wants voters to know before they head to the polls that she is the right person to continue leading the city.
“I will work hard to make sure that Greensboro it is the best place it can possibly be,” Johnson said.
